A small percentage of children with CP have mixed cerebral
palsy. Mixed means a combination of spastic, athetoid,
or ataxic cerebral palsy. The most common combination
of types of CP in mixed CP children is spastic and athetoid
cerebral palsy. The spastic CP generates high muscle
tone, while the athetoid CP causes involuntary movements.
This is because they have injuries to both the pyramidal
and extrapyramidal areas of the brain. Usually the spasticity
is more obvious at first, with involuntary movements
increasing when the child is between nine months and
three years old.1
Mixed Cerebral Palsy can come in other forms as well,
such as having high muscle tone in some muscles, and
low muscle tone in others.
